![]() i'm also not a fan of how you can't craft ammo for any found weapons, i'm confident they could have replaced most weapon pickups with items, and this game would work better, and instead of fire mode switching machines, THOSE could be where you get a new weapon to use for the rest of the run.it is another thing that feels off, specifically because it's too middle of the road and needs to lean harder one direction or the other. ![]() everything else is an inacurrate mess, or feel like actual nerf guns. we've got guns that have the right amount of kick and power, and guns that feel like paintball or airsoft weapons, and have next to no hit feedback aside from one shotting most enemies(except the nailguns, obv).imma be honest, the best weapons are the shotgun and rocket launcher, because they feel like they actually do damage. Weapons: the second best and also second worst aspect of the game, they're a severely mixed bag. it ♥♥♥♥♥ with my head and i don't like it. this game either needed more or less randomization, because the prefabs manage to occupy that EXACT POINT where every level just feels.off. everything is occupying this uncanny valley where my brain THINKS something should look or be laid out a certain way and just isn't. Level design: i am aware that this is supposed to be a roguelike, but it's just BAD. it makes the level and enemy design stand out in the worst way possible, and it only gets worse throughout the game, with the exception of the final zone. the opening level is one of the worst looking iv'e seen in a "retro" FPS, specifically the color palette, the irony of this is that the game graphically looks /too/ good, especially at a higher resolution. ![]() the art style is another story, but we will get there.Īrt style: speak of the devil. It nails that low poly model look very well, while managing to not look ugly, and a lot of the textures are good pixel art quality style, honestly? it's the one area i have no complaints about. To start off with, i'm making this review negative, but i will at least try to be fair in areas that deserve it. STRAFE, a challenge to understand but at this point I say keep at it, the game is definitely worth your effort. There is so much to like with this package and I encourage anyone who likes the genre to give the game a try. There is your progression, at least in the main game. With each fix you can bypass the previous section's teleporter. There are four sections so three teleporters to fix. One of the teleporter parts you literally carry and it's a challenge. The only carry over between runs of the main game are teleporter parts which you use to fix the next section's teleporter. There is no progression save for an alternate mode. Not terrible and given the number of mutators and other modes you will wind up playing the game a lot and thereby obtaining enough coins. I received 3 coins for clearing the game from the beginning. The game also has mutators like big head, rocket only, quite a few and coins can be used to unlock these mutators as well. That coin is usable in only one run and it buys you a bar of one of the above attributes. Fill the XP bar and you get a "whole" coin of which you can buy one of four upgrades, damage, ammo capacity, fire rate and accuracy, that is assuming you fill the bar otherwise you get nothing. Yes, Strafe is a Rogue and you accumulate XP. Lesson learned, don't use items in the shop. I spent a lot, almost all of my available funds on a flying bot and transitioning to the next area he blew up so I never was able to use the drone on that run even though my inventory had it listed. There is a store where you can buy cool gadgets. Now that I've played the game multiple times and have become familiar with many of the layouts, map reliance is really very minimal. Navigation is a real problem and heavily detracts from the game. ![]() One of the guides tells you to look for a "clean" area because the enemies do splatter walls. There is plenty here to like however the map is horrendous and in many instances you don't know which direction to go so you just aimlessly walk around until you see enemies that you haven't slaughtered. The more you play the more you understand and the more you appreciate with the game. I have updated this review multiple times. ![]()
